The Vought F4U Corsair was an iconic American fighter aircraft used during World War II and the Korean War. It was designed by the Vought Aircraft Company in response to a specification from the US Navy in 1938, which called for a fighter capable of operating from aircraft carriers.
The Corsair was a very distinctive aircraft, with its wing folded into a “W” shape to accommodate the large four-bladed propeller and a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine. This configuration allowed the plane to reach speeds of over 650 km/h, making it one of the fastest planes of the time.
Although it was initially designed to operate from aircraft carriers, the Corsair faced problems due to its long fuselage and relatively short landing gear. For this reason, it was initially used on land bases. However, after some modifications, it became one of the US Navy's main carrier-based fighters and was widely used in the Pacific theater during World War II.
The Corsair was well armed, with six .50 caliber Browning M2 machine guns and the ability to carry a wide variety of bombs and rockets. In addition, it performed exceptionally well in aerial combat, being responsible for the destruction of more than 2,000 enemy aircraft during the Second World War.
F4U-4
The F4U-4 is a variant of the F4U Corsair, used by the US Navy and Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. The F4U-4 was introduced in 1944, and featured several improvements over previous models.
One of the main improvements was the more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800-18W engine, which increased the maximum speed to 731 km/h and the aircraft's altitude capacity to 41,500 ft. The F4U-4 also had a larger propeller and a redesigned fairing, which improved engine cooling and reduced drag.
In addition to these performance upgrades, the F4U-4 had a revised cockpit layout and improved armament. It could carry up to six .50 caliber machine guns and rockets or bombs under its wings.
The F4U-4 went into combat in the Pacific theater during World War II and was also used in the Korean War. It was highly regarded by its pilots for its speed, maneuverability and firepower.
One of the most famous battles in which the F4U-4 Corsair was involved was the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War, in December 1950. In this battle, a squadron of 10 US Navy F4U-4s was sent to protect a column of vehicles that was retreating after being surrounded by Chinese forces.
The Corsairs were attacked by a large number of Chinese MiG-15 fighters, which were faster and more maneuverable than the Corsair. Despite this, the American pilots managed to shoot down several MiG-15s during the battle.
One of the most notable battles involved US Navy pilot Jesse L. Brown, who was flying an F4U-4.
